I have the Lezyne shock pump your talking about. I still carry it in a sock to cushion the blow if any it would deal to my body if I were to "roll" on it. It's been a very handy little pump. My other pumps now just reside in the shop. Like you said about Lezyne stuff, it's all very well made. I don't use the gauge built in to it much just go for feel.
Nice! Good to know. I also find going by feel, and sag, rather than pressure is best. Pressure can change with air temps too. And yeah, falling on a pump would not be fun. Hydration packs are available with back protectors built in, I know Evoc does some and probably other manufacturers.
